The Sky Is Falling

Normally I enjoy having large trees in my yard. Of course, when the leaves start to fall, then I do not like them as much. Leaves, however, are not quite as bad as acorns. True, the acorns are smaller than the oak leaves. But, when a leaf hits the roof or awning, it does not make quite the same impact as a falling acorn. Similarly, when leaves hit me on the head, it is only a minor distraction. An acorn, landing squarely on the head, is quite different.

Unfortunately, I had the agony of experiencing an acorn clubbing me. As typical, Rachel and I had let the dogs out of the house so that they could do their business. The impact only worsened my mild headache, but fortunately left no permanent damage (that I am aware). The squirrels, who I was cursing at the time, were not so lucky.

We were about to let the dogs in when we heard a small crash followed by some whimpering. We went to investigate, but the dogs beat us to the crash site. Kara, holding a semi-conscious squirrel in her mouth, led the dogs in a joyful romp around the yard. So far, it is Dogs 3, Squirrels 0. Typically called pests, I still enjoy the squirrels’ presence and am sorry for the loss. One would hope that the squirrels would learn not to chew the branches they are standing on.
